Karl Lemart Wells II 
Police arrested a former Western Guilford High basketball coach Tuesday on a sex charge. Karl Lemart Wells II, 27, of 4003 Old Oak Ridge Road is charged with indecent liberties with a student. Wells is a former assistant teacher for exceptional education and former assistant girls’ basketball coach at Western Guilford High School. He turned himself in to authorities and was released on a written promise to appear, according to police. A Guilford County Schools spokesman said Wells was hired in September 2003. The charge stems from an incident on Oct. 27, according to court documents.Police Capt. Janice Rogers said the investigation began after a female student’s mother found a text message on the girl’s phone and notified school officials. Rogers said Wells resigned from his position shortly after the mother notified the school. It took two months to arrest Wells because investigators had difficulty locating the teen’s mother, Rogers said. Arrest warrants say that Wells “did attempt indecent liberties” with the student but do not elaborate. Rogers said the student is no longer enrolled at Western Guilford High. Willem J. Pet A Authorities are investigating a Durham teacher for sharing more than 1,800 images of suspected child pornography online. The State Bureau of Investigation said Monday it seized computer files and other records from the home of 61-year-old Willem J. Pet, a teacher at Southern Durham High School. Pet has not been charged, but Durham County Schools spokesman Michael Yarbrough said he had been suspended with pay since Dec. 12. A search warrant said investigators used a program to tap into Pet's IP address and flag any files that have been suspected of depicting child pornography. The charges against her were filed by the student's parents in July. Guilford County Schools told WFMY News 2 they had investigated similar complaints about Macklin but found no evidence of wrong-doing. Macklin was with the school from 2005 until she resigned in June of this year. The District Attorney's office has not set a trial date for the case. David Brandon Earp  A former wrestling coach at Fike High School who was arrested on Jan. 26 amidst allegations that he had committed a sexual offense against a female student, was sentenced to 12 months probation in Wilson County Superior Court Tuesday.David Brandon Earp, 33, whose last known address was 7378 Rock Ridge Sims Road, pleaded no contest to one count of sexual battery before Superior Court Judge Walter Godwin. Earp was accompanied in court by his attorney, Tom Sallenger, his parents and his wife. Earp was facing six felony counts of indecent liberties with a minor. "There has been a contradiction in the evidence that has surfaced in the last few weeks," Assistant District Attorney Charles Thomas told the judge Tuesday in court. "We have spoken to the family (of the victim) and the investigating officers, and we all are in agreement this is the best course of action." Thomas went on to say that this situation has placed a tremendous strain on the victim and her family and said that Earp should have to register as a sex offender. Jeremiah Frady, 36, of Lenoir was arrested and charged early Thursday morning. Detectives with the Lenoir Police Department began the investigation in December of 2007 with the full cooperation of the Caldwell County School System. On Monday, the case was forwarded to the grand jury where the indictments were handed down. Frady was booked at the Caldwell County Jail and is under a $25,000 secured bond. Kelly Bartz
Kelly Bartz, 39, waited hours through other scheduled hearings, and joined her court-appointed attorney, Rick Hamlett, as he asked the judge for a continuance. Hamlett was assigned the case in September. The continuance postpones the next court proceeding until Dec. 15. Bartz was indicted by a Nash County grand jury in August for sexual activity with a student between the age of 14 and 17 by a teacher. The student involved in the charge is above the legal age of consent, but age doesn’t matter in the statute that Bartz allegedly violated. The charge is based on whether or not a teacher and student engage in a sexual act at any time during or after the two were present together in school where the adult is employed and the student is enrolled. The community of Forest City is in shock, after learning that a teacher at Dunbar Elementary has been arrested and charged with two counts of taking indecent liberties with a student.
58 year old Jimmy Walker was arrested last week after parents and a school investigator became suspicious.
"We started investigating several incidents that occurred January 2006 to October 2008 involving touching," Police Chief Randy Chapman said.
Walker resigned last week under a threat of termination for misconduct. He also voluntarily surrendered his teaching license.
He is now out of jail on $50,000 bond.

39-year-old former middle school teacher will spend 20 days in jail and five years on probation after pleading guilty today to 10 counts of second-degree exploitation of a minor.
Jason Garant Perkins gave an emotional confession of his sexual addiction after a prosecutor described nearly 200 images of child erotica and pornography found on his computer. The images included video of minors engaged in sex.
"I soothed myself it was only a fantasy world," Perkins said, adding that he has since joined Sex Addicts Anonymous and a 12-step program called Celebrate Recovery. His computer is filtered for sexual content, and he spends only about 15 minutes a day out of the company of his wife, employer or customers at the store where he now works.
Perkins, of Morrisville, taught social studies at Woods Charter School in Chapel Hill until abruptly resigning just before charges were filed in April.
His wife, Kelly, spoke tearfully of losing friends, selling nearly all their possessions to pay bills and, worst, having to send her 13-year-old son to live with his biological father out of state while the case progressed.

A middle school teacher is in jail on charges he had sex with an underage girl.
Crayton Middle School math teacher Mark Edward Craft, 47, was arrested Wednesday and charged with having sex with a 15-year-old girl at his apartment, Lexington County Sheriff's officials said this morning.
The sheriff's department said Craft and the girl exchanged text messages after meeting on a social networking Web site. Investigators accuse Craft of posing as a 16-year-old boy who said he wanted to meet the girl. The girl told deputies she sent Craft a text message inviting him to her Bishopville home. She said Craft drove her in his minivan to his apartment Friday, where they played cards, consumed alcohol and had sex.
The sheriff's department said the girl left the apartment about 3:11 p.m. Saturday and called 911 for help. Deputies entered Craft's apartment to investigate, and the girl was returned to her mother. An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday.

A janitor is accused of sexually assaulting a 6-year-old at Joyner Elementary School.
Greensboro police arrested 55-year-old Joel Stephenson Wednesday.
Investigators say he sexually assaulted the girl over the summer while she was taking an English as a Second Language class at Joyner.
Stephenson is charged with one count of taking indecent liberties with a minor and first-degree sex offense. Detectives say Stephenson was employed as the school custodian during the alleged assault. Stephenson is no longer employed with the Guilford County School system.

A former county teacher arrested for alleged sexual acts with a student has been charged again, after police stopped a vehicle occupied by the woman and the same underage boy during an early-morning driver’s license checkpoint this weekend.
According to reports by Clinton police, the 15-year-old Hispanic male was behind the wheel of a blue Ford Explorer and the woman, Jeannie Michelle Hodges of 12237 Dunn Road, Autryville, was in the passenger seat. The vehicle was stopped just after midnight Friday, while traveling on Main Street in the city square, according to reports.
Following the stop, Hodges, 40, was charged with allowing an unlicensed minor to drive and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, the same charge she received along with two other felony offenses in connection with a separate investigation earlier this summer involving the same teenager.
Hodges, a former teacher with Hobbton Middle School, was arrested in July on charges of statutory rape, sexual offense with a student and contributing to the delinquency of a minor following a weeks-long investigation by the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office.

An East Henderson High School teacher arrested and charged in May 2007 with one felony count of sex offense with a student was sentenced to three years of probation.
Health science teacher Julie Miller Culbertson, 38, of 1200 Davis Mountain Road, was arrested by Henderson County Sheriff’s Office detectives at the central offices of the Henderson County school system in May 2007.
Per a plea agreement in July, Culbertson pleaded guilty to the felony charge and spent 30 days in the Henderson County jail. Culbertson was released from jail in August, according to Assistant District Attorney Beth Dierauf.
The victim, the daughter of a local police officer, was not present during the sentencing proceedings this morning. Resident Superior Court Judge Mark Powell allowed the victim’s father to address the court about the incident.
“It’s a shame that in my 24 years in law enforcement I have protected strangers, and I couldn’t even protect my own daughter,” he said while sobbing.

The former Chapel Hill teacher charged with sexually abusing girls at a Montessori school was found guilty by a jury Wednesday. Eric Grange, 45, of 519 Banks St. in Raleigh, was convicted of two counts of statutory first-degree sex offense and eight counts of indecent liberties with a child. Police said the girls were abused at the Montessori Community School in Chapel Hill in 2005 and 2006.
Grange, a French citizen, resigned from the school in June 2006 after authorities questioned him about suspected abuse of students, school officials said. U.S. immigration agents arrested him at Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C., three months later after warrants had been issued in the case.
Six of Grange's victims were expected to testify against him. The prosecution and defense agreed to bar the media from the courtroom to protect the girls and their families.

An ex-school bus driver convicted of raping children has asked for post-conviction relief.
Brian Lee Wrigglesworth is set to have a hearing Oct. 14 to discuss relief.
Wrigglesworth was charged in an 87-count indictment of raping three 6- and 7-year-old girls at Glenellen Elementary School between April and May 2004.
Wrigglesworth pleaded guilty to three counts of child rape and was sentenced to 30 years in prison by Judge John H. Gasaway in May 2006.
Wrigglesworth must serve all of his sentence. Not even the governor can reduce the sentence. Attorney Greg Smith will represent Wrigglesworth during the hearing.
Wrigglesworth will have to register as a sex offender upon his scheduled release in 2034, when he will be 68 years old.

The Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday charged a high school teacher with three counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor, an arrest report said.
Charles Elsbury Whedbee, 41, a teacher at Pasquotank County High School, was being held in the Albemarle District Jail with bond set at $30,000, Sheriff Randy Cartwright said.
Deputies began investigating the case a few weeks ago after receiving information from several sources alleging an illegal relationship between Whedbee and a 15-year-old student, Cartwright said.

A man who was arrested while he was a teacher and coach at Madison High School was convicted Tuesday of disseminating pornography to a minor. He received a sentence of 30 days in jail and 120 days suspended sentence.
Chad Vance Draper, 29, of Fairview, was convicted in Madison District Court after both the victim and a detective testified that a video Draper admitted showing the girl involved a couple having sex.
The girl, a minor at the time, testified that Draper showed her the video in an office in the school gymnasium. She said she didn't invite the attention, and that it made her uncomfortable. It made her think that "maybe you couldn't trust everybody," she said.

A former Sanderson High School teacher who admitted to kissing and fondling a female student pleaded guilty Wednesday in Wake County Superior Court.
Raleigh police arrested Shannon Lynn Best, 28, in April on a charge of taking indecent liberties with a student by school personnel. She pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of misdemeanor attempted crime against nature and giving alcohol to a student.
In a search warrant, police said Best admitted to being involved with the 18-year-old student for about a month and to sending nude images of herself in text messages.

A former Western Alamance High School teacher's assistant charged last week with having sex with a student could face additional charges for an alleged relationship with another teen.
During an interview with the 17-year-old male student, who told authorities that Leslie Marie Troup provided him with alcohol and had sex with him on several occasions, the boy said Troup told him she had a relationship with another student last year.
The boy told authorities that "Troup confided in him that she had had a sexual relationship with another student in 2007 but did not identify the student," according to a search warrant obtained by Alamance County Sheriff's deputy K.A. Neil on June 5.

Herman Keith Overcash, the former principal of South Davidson High School, on Thursday afternoon pleaded guilty to three counts of felony sexual activity with a student and received a mix of active prison time, suspended prison time and probation.
Superior Court Judge Kimberly Taylor on Thursday ordered Overcash, 54, to serve an active sentence of two months for each charge, for a total of six months. He gets credit for time he has spent in jail since his arrest in April. Also as part of a plea agreement reached with the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office, Overcash was sentenced to three consecutive prison terms of 13 months to 16 months. Those sentences, a total of 39 months to 48 months, were suspended, and Overcash will spend five years on supervised probation after his active prison sentence.

Two misdemeanor charges of assault on female students filed by police against a New Bern High School teacher and coach were dismissed Wednesday in Craven County District court.
The teacher, Phillip Beeson, was freed of the charges after two teenage girls in the case had their attorney, Michael Mills, request that their subpoenas be quashed.

Shebana Rajput, of Aaron Johnson Lane, Kinston, was arrested Monday and charged with eight counts of sexual activity with a student and one count of sex offense with a student. She was jailed under a $100,000 secure bond.
According to a news release, Lenoir County Sheriff's investigators were contacted May 23 by Jones County authorities regarding an investigation of sexual assault by a teacher with a 17-year-old student, who attended Jones Senior High.
The incidents took place at Rajput's home, the news release said, which is why Lenoir County authorities got involved.
County authorities said in the news release that between the months of March and May, nine separate incidents of sexual activity with the student were indentified. Authorities arrested Rajput at her home.

A man accused of sex crimes against children could spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Richard Murphy was appointed a public defender during his first court appearance Monday. Investigators tell us he had sexual contact with as many as nine young boys several years ago.
Two of the alleged victims were targeted while Murphy was a substitute teacher with Burke County schools in 1993. The boys attended Salem Elementary School and Oak Hill Elementary Schools. Right now, Murphy is only facing one charge - felony statutory sexual offense. It carries a maximum sentence of life without parole.

A former high school teacher was in court Thursday morning on three counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor.
Charles Elsbury Whedbee, who was a social studies teacher at Pasquotank High, was arrested Wednesday.
In court Thursday, his bond was kept at $30,000 and he told the court the name of his attorney. He then returned to Albemarle District Regional Jail.
Investigators say Whedbee had an illegal relationship with a student at the school from March until his arrest.

The principal of South Davidson High School has been arrested and charged with two counts of felony sexual activity with a student, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office said Friday. According to a press release, DCSO detectives received information that Herman Keith Overcash, 54, of Winston-Salem, had sexual contact on two occasions with a 17-year-old female student who currently attends South Davidson High School.
Overcash has been principal at South Davidson since 2004, after spending two years as an assistant principal. Detectives with the DCSO conducted an investigation into the allegations, after which two warrants were issued on Overcash for two counts of felony sexual activity with a student by a school administrator.
Detectives arrested Overcash at 8:48 p.m. Thursday without incident at his home on South Stratford Road in Winston-Salem with the assistance of the Winston-Salem Police Department. Overcash was brought before a magistrate, who set a $250,000 secured bond.

Stokes County Sheriff's Department arrested John Brasfield, a teacher at South Stokes High School, for taking indecent liberties with a minor.
WFMY News 2 spoke the mother of the young girl. The mother asked to remain anonymous at this point. She told us this is a very difficult situation for her and her family.
The incident is alleged to have happened sometime in March. Reportedly Brasfield has been suspended without pay by the school system.
